Teamsters banner unionizes Cannabis growers

The recession has really hurt lots of the organized labor that needs to get more individuals. The Teamster union is looking towards a business that might be growing in The United States soon since it was injured by the recession too. The Associated Press records that the planting business of Marijuana is what Teamsters is looking toward now.

Teamsters working to get marijuana growers unionized

Marijuana growers, about 40 to be exact, were picked up in September by Teamsters. There is no proof, however numerous assume the members must mostly be from California. This is because within the whole nation, California has one of the most permissive medical marijuana laws. Numerous wonder how Teamsters plans to protect its members that are committing federal crimes with the growing season.

The AP talked to Lou Marchetti, who works with Teamsters local 70 with newly signed growers, who said that when he joined about 34 years ago, he did not think he’d work with cannabis workers.

”This is a whole new ballgame,” he explained.

Marchetti was quite clear when he informed the news agency that Teamsters would not get involved with marijuana growers in California if they believed the business was not operating within the bounds of state law.

Teamsters ends up with more work with Marjyn Investments LCC on the loose

Gardening, trimming and even cloning are jobs held by employees of Marjyn Investments LLC, a company that contracts with medical cannabis patients to grow marijuana plants. The Teamsters Union works with contracts. They began the two year contract. Now they all have paid escape, health insurance and even pensions. Teamsters Local 70 explains that within the next 15 months, wages will go from $18 to $25.75 per hour.

Trying to figure out all the problems with growing pot

Growing marijuana plants is against federal law, although states like California do allow the enterprise for controlled medicinal purposes. It is possible for the federal government to start looking into Marjyn Investments just a little more. If this were to happen, Marchetti doesn’t know how Teamsters would react. Based on the AP, being a weed trimmer is really hard work. This is why if the trimmers were abused in any way, the government would not step in on their behalf. In Oakland, there is an assistant regional director for National Labor Relations Board. This is Michael Leong who states that the category of farm workers may not even contain Teamster pot growers. The NLRB would not be in control at all if that is the case.

Marijuana dispensaries grow while cultivation remains ‘in the shadows’

California law has allowed marijuana dispensaries to grow into a booming new business, however existing laws have not fully defined just how cultivation operations like Marjyn Investments LLC should be regulated. There is definite interest from applicants wanting to break into the field, but how applicable labor standards should be applied is a work in progress. At this point, one of the only things that is clear as applicants await their permits to open shop is that membership in the Teamsters Union isn’t required in order to operate.
